For the centenary year of the WI your committee has decided to set a challenge for all members of Horsmonden tWIlite.
In February 2016 we have asked Mary Gwynn to visit our monthly meeting. Mary has been an editor, trainer & writer for various food publications (M&S/BBC Vegetarian Good Food /Waitrose). She is the author of The Busy Mum's Cookbook, Back in Time for Dinner and most importantly for us, The WI Cookbook: the First 100 Years.
The Challenge:
To cook our way through the
First 100 years of WI Recipes !!
We would love you to take notes and pictures of your endeavours to post to this Blog (if you prefer send to our email [email protected] and we will do the necessary)
- very "Julie & Julia" - we will be internet sensation..........?
We have acquired a small stock of the said cookbook which will be available to purchase at our September meeting.
So Ladies, LET'S COOK !!

P150 Brandy Snaps
These were quite ambitious and a little fiddly - my second batch were definitely better with practice... I'll save you from a picture of the first ones!

Have tried and can really recommend
P181 Italian Lamb with Roasted Sweet Peppers.
Easy to prepare and cook. Was delicious
Then made p180 Ginger Chocolate Brownies
Easy to make but have made much tastier Brownies and now left with a jar of stem ginger in syrup.
Expect I shall have to make ginger cake to use it all up

P164 Herb baked Chicken
Very powerful lemon flavour and plentiful herbs - I think less may have been more to make the herbs more crispy - would adjust recipe next time.

I tried the Herb Baked Chicken and can thoroughly recommend it. I have to say it didn't really look like Gills. Far less green and more oniony. I put the spare chopped onion in the stock and made a sort of gravy. Family said please do that one again so it went down well. I shall take a picture next time.

Me again. I have also made the Sloe Gin (page96) but I can't yet comment on its result as it is maturing. I noticed that it has far less sugar than my usual recipe. Roll on Christmas .....

Stilton Soup with Broccoli p192 - I was slightly short of Stilton so I made up the difference with smoked cheddar -delicious. Lamb Pot Roast p74 ( from my daughter's own flock no less!) with Nettle Champ p152 ( I did cop out and use Spring Greens rather than Nettles though) was a tasty alternative to the Sunday Roast. Gipsy Creams p184 - Unfortunately think I left these in a tad too long as some were a bit darker than intended! Sizing may have been the problem. I made 22 but confused because the recipe says 16- is that just 8 doubles or 32 singles ?? May experiment again. Spiced Whisky Cake p153 made with Pecans rather than Walnuts- a lovely moist cake- might have been a bit liberal with the amber dew. Hic ! Gill D 10/11/15 |
Forget to log that in September I made the Cherry and Almond Cake on page 108
In true Horsmonden TWILITE style I had no almonds so used coconut
Wasn't bad in taste but not that wonderful.
Family enjoyed Honey Lamb shoulder yesterday.page 206.
Very easy to make and delicious.
We had Apricot and almond crumble too page 182.
In haste to eat everything I forgot to take any photos .....
